After 10 years of duty with the Marines, veteran Jon Dan Fasano studied aviation and welding before obtaining a position as a general designer. Since 2006, Jon Dan Fasano has created furniture for respected interior design firm Kalalou, which offers well-made and unique home decor in trending styles. The store's most recent collection features items made in the popular coastal style.
Coastal design is based on elements commonly found in seaside cottages. The typical color palette is reminiscent of a wide sandy coastline and features white, earthy neutrals, and various shades of blue. There is a special interest in the use of diverse textures and bold patterns, such as chevron and stripes.
Nautical themed objects such as seashells or sea glass can be used sparingly to add a whimsical touch. There is also an emphasis on natural and woven materials such as jute. Architecturally, the coastal design focuses on abundant sources of natural light. This translates as oversized floor-to-ceiling windows and minimalistic window treatments.
